WASH Risk Index
Average of six gaps/risks: basic water, sanitation, handwashing, safely managed water, open defecation, and E. coli exposure. Higher values mean higher WASH risk.
Malawi WASH Budget 2026/27 + DHS 2024
Interactive district-level comparison of 2026/27 budget allocations and DHS 2024 WASH and nutrition indicators. This version includes simplified district geometries, a nutrition indicator profile, and sector deep dives for WASH, health, and nutrition budgets.
WASH access and deprivation signals from DHS 2024. Use the selector to view the WASH Risk Index alongside nutrition and social indicator layers.
Average of six gaps/risks: basic water, sanitation, handwashing, safely managed water, open defecation, and E. coli exposure. Higher values mean higher WASH risk.
Average of stunting, wasting, and underweight prevalence. Higher values mean higher undernutrition burden.
Expanded map gallery across WASH, nutrition, and household energy indicators.
Compare undernutrition burdens alongside service access and household energy indicators.
Average stunting, wasting, and underweight from 2024 DHS compared to a 15% stunting target.
CDF budget and alignment layers combined into one map for clearer budgeting analysis.
X-axis: district WASH Risk Index. Y-axis: CDF budget allocation (bn, selected currency).
Bars show Pearson correlation (-1 to +1) between district CDF totals and DHS indicators. Positive values mean higher budgets align with higher indicator values; negative means higher budgets align with lower indicator values. Correlation shows association, not causation.
| District | CDF Total (bn, selected currency) | WASH Risk Index | Basic Water % | Basic Sanitation % | Basic Handwashing % | Safely Managed Water % | Budget/WASH Risk Ratio | Rank Gap |

`Percent` uses the GBD percentage metric from the source extract and is shown as percentage points.
These tabs reuse the child-burden logic from the source prototype, but are reorganized to fit the sector framing used throughout this atlas.
Each bar is a WASH-attributable cause, split by the child age bands carrying the burden.
Child age bands split into WASH Core and WASH Extended causes.
Shows which named causes sit in the core WASH burden versus the broader WASH-related infection envelope.
All child causes, with each bar split by the age bands carrying the selected burden.
Shows how much of the child health burden in each age band sits inside WASH Core, WASH Extended, and Non-WASH causes.
Classifies the leading causes into WASH-related and non-WASH child health burdens.
Direct undernutrition and WASH-linked infection causes, split by the ages where they are most concentrated.
Shows how direct undernutrition and WASH-linked infections stack up across child age bands.
Flips the view so age bands are on the axis and each colour represents a leading nutrition-relevant cause.
For protective indicators, we invert the percentage so higher values represent higher WASH risk.
water_gap = 100 - basic_water_service_pct sanitation_gap = 100 - basic_sanitation_service_pct handwashing_gap = 100 - basic_handwashing_facility_pct safe_water_gap = 100 - safely_managed_drinking_water_pct open_defecation_risk = open_defecation_pct e_coli_risk = e_coli_in_household_water_pct
The WASH Risk Index is a weighted average of the six components above, on a 0-100 scale (defaults to equal weights).
wash_risk_index = mean( water_gap, sanitation_gap, handwashing_gap, safe_water_gap, open_defecation_risk, e_coli_risk )
Districts are ranked by budget (largest = rank 1) and by WASH risk (highest risk = rank 1).
underfunding_signal = budget_rank - wash_risk_rank positive -> underfunding signal negative -> overfunding signal near zero -> budget and risk ranks broadly aligned
The dashboard paints the gap as a signed number so districts with higher risk ranks than budgets surface for targeted advocacy.
The Nutrition Risk Index is a weighted average of stunting, wasting, and underweight percentages. Higher values signal higher undernutrition burden.
nutrition_risk_index = mean(stunting_pct, wasting_pct, underweight_pct)
We also compute a blended index to compare WASH risk with nutrition risk.
wash_nutrition_blend_index = (0.7 * wash_risk_index) + (0.3 * nutrition_risk_index)
The sector tabs layer district allocation signals atop national ministry votes, so you can trace how central health, nutrition, and water budgets finance delivery.
The tabs highlight major cost categories (e.g., MOHS service delivery, MOAIWD construction, social cash transfers) and the staffing pressure signalled by personnel envelopes and water board operations.
Adjust component weights. Values are relative; indices are normalized to 0-100. Set a component to 0 to exclude it.
